Vicki Torr was a much loved Australian glass artist, whose early death on 22 August 1992 after a long illness stirred the glass art community. Tributes showed just what a warm and appreciated personality she was. As a result, the Ausglass Board proposed in Summer 1992/3 to devote the auction proceeds at each biannual conference towards a Vicki Torr Memorial Fund to be used to promote scholarships and glass artists.

The Vicki Torr Memorial Fund started by providing a prize - the Vicki Torr Memorial Scholarship for the best work by an emerging artist at the Members' Exhibition held at each conference.

As the amount of money in the fund grew, the Board also instituted the Vicki Torr Online Gallery Prize, awarded annually for works shown in the Ausglass Online Gallery by an emerging artist. This has now become an important event, with all Ausglass members voting in December/January.
