Workshops

In developing the workshop program, the aim has been to facilitate workshops that will challenge and extend artists working at a variety of levels. The aim is for excellence as well as accessibility to knowledge and skills. Both members travelling from interstate as well as local members should find something enticing within the offerings. Please consider matching your conference visit and tour of Tasmania with a workshop. Visit the links for more information about each workshop and the presenter.  The map below shows the general locations of the workshops within Tasmania (click on 'larger map' to get a better view). Except for the Hugh Jenkins workshop, the workshops run in the week before the Conference.

You are responsible for your own travel to the workshop, local accommodation, and meals outside workshop hours. Participants will be encouraged to car pool, or there are the Redline Coaches providing intra-state bus services http://www.redlinecoaches.com.au/. Tasmania has no passenger trains.

The workshop fee includes tuition and limited materials. In most cases this will be enough for the workshop; in other cases you may want to purchase additional supplies as the workshop progresses. See the individual workshop page for guidance. To register for a workshop, download the Registration Form. The quoted prices are for Ausglass members/non-members.

"The nature of casting"
Hosted by Ruth & Fintan Downham - CAST GLASS
Woodbridge (40min south of Hobart in the Channel District)
Capture the essence of the natural world as 3D-form, texture and light through glass casting. Helen will guide you through techniques of mold making (taking textures and molds from natural items), and lost wax casting, building layered molds and the "honeycomb technique" allowing fine detail and delicate texture. You will experience nature in perhaps one of the most stunningly sited studios in Australia. Surrounded by bush on an elevated ridgeline, yet with access to the sheltered water of the Channel region, there is no end of natural inspiration. Finish each day with a dip in the pool. For all levels of experience.

Hugh Jenkins (Hawai'i, USA) - Detail Page  19-23 January - $1320/$1420
In conjunction with the Poatina Community Arts Centre, hosted by Keith Dougall - SUSTAINABLE HOT GLASS PRACTICE
Poatina (45min drive SW of Launceston, 2hr north of Hobart)
Runs week after conference
The 4 or 5 day workshop (exact dates tbc) will take place post conference and will be a practical and hands on workshop designing, building and fitting a recuperator to an existing glass furnace. All technical and theoretical issues will be addressed throughout the course of the workshop to give you a proper understanding of the system for you to build your own recuperators to fit to your own equipment. It's not rocket science and the investment is soon returned by the savings in (increasing) fuel costs.
