The Conference season starts off with a Welcome to the 30th Anniversary Exhibition at the Carnegie Gallery on Thursday evening.
The first day of the Conference will open with a 'Welcome to Country' from the Tasmanian aboriginal people, an opening address by Tasmanian craft entrepreneur Gary Cleveland, address by Ausglass President Maureen Williams and presentation of the 'Honorary Life Member' award, and a review of the birth of Ausglass thirty years ago by Stephen Skillitzi and others. The Conference Keynote Address will be delivered by Shane Fero, the President of GAS and internationally known flameworker from the United States. You can find Shane's cv in the Workshop section.
The afternoon will focus on the important issue of large-scale glass works - architectural art glass - and will feature Liz Coleman, educator and artist regarding future training trends in architectural glass, and Vaughan Taylor & Lindy Sando, who held an ISS Fellowship to pick up international trends in 2006. The afternoon will be rounded off by a Reception at Government House hosted by His Excellency the Governor and Mrs Underwood.
Saturday starts off with a gallery hop and market experience, in parallel with open house demos. In the afternoon Dr Kate Crowley, sustainability adviser to the Tasmanian Government, will open the sustainable glass afternoon. She will be followed by technical experts in reducing your carbon footprint Hugh Jenkins (USA, furances and glory holes), Peter Minsom (oxygen in reducing gas requirements) and Peter Riley (efficient kilns), rounded off by an Open Forum with a panel of the speakers augmented by Brian Hirst.
Sunday opens with a Tasmanian session. Arthur Sale will talk about what you need to know before you start your website and what to look out for. The closing address will be delivered by Tom Moore, an Australian glass artist in the forefront of contemporary hot glass. This will be followed by the AGM and presentation of prizes and awards, leading into the always exciting and fast-paced Auctions. Then to culminate the Conference, join the Closing Party on the MV Cartela for a Derwent Estuary Cruise.
